put oneself in someone's shoes

最近イディオム紹介が続いています。

英語学習に有益なネタが他にもあるのですが、小出しにしていきたい、という考えもありまして。

Brothers And Sisters から Kitty と Robert の会話です。揉めてます。Robert が相談なしに知事選への出馬を決めたり、Kitty が受けたタイム誌のインタビューを消そうとしたり。当然 Kitty は気に入らないわけです。Robert もKitty について気に入らないことがあります。長い会話なので適当に掻い摘みました。

Robert: You knew what you were getting into when you married me.

Kitty: Okay,just because I happened to know that you were ambitious doesn't mean that you're absolved from considering my point of view.

Robert: I consider your point of view. I-I just don't always agree with it.

Kitty: Right.Because you don't even know what it is. My god, Robert, just for-- for one second, can't you just put yourself in my shoes.

Robert: Then who would be in mine?

ロバート：結婚したとき、それがどういうことかわかってただろ。

キティ：あなたが野心的な政治家だって知ってたからって、私の意見に耳を傾けなくていい理由にはならないでしょ。

ロバート：耳は傾けてるよ。ただいつも同意するわけじゃないってだけだ。

キティ：そうね。知りもしないんだから同意なんかできるわけない。あー、もう！ロバート、少しでいいわ、少しでいいから私の身にもなってよ。

ロバート：じゃあ、誰が俺の身になるんだよ。

"put oneself in someone's shoes" というのは「~(someone)の立場に立って物事を考える」というような意味です。「~の身になる」「~の気持ちになる」みたいな。

特に調べてませんが、靴の履き心地は履いてみないとわかりません。なので、履いてみろ。で、どんな感触か確かめろ。ということなんでしょうが。

上の例のように相手に向かって "put yourself in my shoes" (こっちの身にもなれ！）というような使い方が多いかもしれませんが、必ずしもこの型だけではありません。もちろん。

In negotiations, we sometimes need to put ourselves in shoes of people who we talk to.

（交渉ごとにおいては、相手の立場を考えることも時には必要だ）

ちなみに Robert の最後のセリフは

Then who would put themselves into my shoes?

という意味です。自分の身には誰もなってくれない、と。
